Volgens mij was er al een topic over deze film, maar de zoekfunctie vindt niets onder die naam. Edit: Sterker nog, nadat ik het topic heb aangemaakt, vindt de zoekfunctie het niet (zoeken in subforum filmdiscussies, alleen in titel met zoekterm "Pacific Rim"). Als iemand van de heren moderatoren het bestaande topic weet te vinden, dan kunnen ze dit bericht er wellicht naar kopiëren.
Pacific Rim is de film waar Guillermo del Toro aan is begonnen nadat hij The Hobbit achter zich had gelaten en At the Mountains of Madness was vastgelopen. De synopsis:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee —who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
De hoofdrol is voor Charlie Hunnam. De rest van de cast bestaat o.a. uit Del Toros vaste kracht Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr. en Idris Elba, die hieronder te zien is op de eerste officiële foto van de productie.
Pacific Rim staat gepland voor release bij ons in Augustus 2013, een maand na de première in Amerika en de release in o.a. België.

Blij te zien dat Charlie Hunnam eindelijk die hoofdrol in een grote film te pakken heeft. It's about time. Ik zag hem als de geknipte man voor Thor en (het nog steeds uitgestelde) Masters of the Universe, He-Man. Hij had als Nathan Maloney al laten zien dat hij wel iets in z'n mars had en bevestigde toen hij in "Hooligans" voor de nodige peper zorgde. Ik kan talloze namen verzinnen die nog maar weinig talent lieten zien en meteen immens veel kansen in de schoot geworpen kregen. Leuk dat ook z'n "Sons of Anarchy"-collega Ron Perlman (Hellboy) alweer te zien is.
PS : Hier was inderdaad reeds een topic van, maar dat kom ik de laatste tijd wel vaker tegen. (eigen) Topics van titels die nu mondjesmaat van nieuws voorzien worden bestonden al een tijdje maar zijn onvindbaar.

Regisseur Del Toro is er geen voorstander van, maar Warner Bros. gaat de film toch converteren naar 3D. Het artikel achter de link suggereert dat er in ieder geval een raar argument meespeelt: In de Chinese markt heeft een Amerikaanse film meer kans om toegelaten te worden als die in 3D of IMAX-formaat is.

Elke keer dit topic bovenaan verschijnt, open ik met de hoop op een trailer om vervolgens 'damn' te denken.
Geforceerde 3D, ah ... zolang ik de 2D-versie maar kan gaan bekijken.

De eerste trailer zou wel eens (pas) rond de Kerstdagen kunnen verschijnen, aldus Del Toro zelf op de Comic-Con.

Ik vind 3D best leuk,maar het moet wel de keuze van de Regisseur zijn.
Met Bluray heb je de keuze 2D of 3D.Zelf pak ik meestal de 3D/2D pack.
In de Bios moet je die optie ook hebben.
PPPPPffffff,Trailer kan noch lang duren.

Maar zeer treurig nieuws natuurlijk.
Maar goed, 't is weer eens een filmtotaal-artikeltje gebaseerd op een bron van een bron met wat stemmingmakende eigen interpretaties. Del Toro is er geen voorstander van, maar heeft daar een heel logische en vooral pratkische onderbouwing voor. Hij is kennelijk geen principieel tegenstander van 3D op zich en er is daarom ook geen reden om a la filmtotaal te suggereren dat hij er diep ongelukkig mee is.
Tenzij er een bericht opduikt wat op het tegendeel wijst, mag je wel verwachten dat e.e.a. desondanks in goed overleg gebeurd is en dat Del Toro (vermoedelijk) gewoon uit eigen beweging bij de 3D-conversie betrokken wordt - in plaats van dat hij gedwongen wordt.

Een toelichting van Del Toro over waarom hij toch heeft ingestemd met een 3D-conversie. Hij heeft een paar stevige voorwaarden gesteld, waar Fox mee heeft ingestemd. Al met al klinkt het lang niet zo dramatisch als het lijkt... en zeker niet zoals filmtotaal beweerde. Ofwel in Del Toro's eigen woorden:
"What happened was, in the weeks and months following Comic-Con, what I asked from the studio was to agree to four points that I wanted to do," he says. "The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize. I asked the studio, number one, that we would not hyper-stereo-lize the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed. Number two, they agreed to something very unusual. Normally a conversion takes a few weeks. I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, 'Titanic' took about 50 weeks to convert. The final thing that I asked that they agreed to, which was amazing, was that I asked them to give me an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We're not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That's a huge, huge element. Now I'm going to be involved in supervising it. What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I'm not running for office. I can do a Romney."
