Dis leaps at chance with 'Frog'

Walt Disney Feature Animation is getting back into the business of traditional animation with Frog Princess, a new twist on a classic fairy tale. Disney Animation's new leaders Ed Catmull and John Lasseter may have earned their reputation as computer-animation maestros at Pixar Animation Studios, but now that they are overseeing Disney's animation efforts, they also are interested in exploring Disney's 2-D tradition. The studio is putting John Musker and Ron Clements in charge ofdeveloping Frog, which promises, according to sources, to put a female spin on the tale of the Frog Prince. Musker and Clements demonstrated their ability to spin a popular tale around a female protagonist with 1989's The Little Mermaid. They also worked together on such traditionally animated Disney musicals as Aladdin and Hercules. However, their last film for the studio was Treasure Planet, an animated adventure tale that proved a boxoffice disappointment when it grossed $38 million domestically in 2002. Shortly thereafter, they left the studio.

Ben overigens toch wel benieuwd naar de CGI-film Rapunzel (die daarvoor nog komt). De plaatjes die ik heb gezien, zien er goed uit! Wel jammer dat Glen Keane (nadat John Lasseter had aangegeven hem de keus te laten) niet heeft gekozen voor 2D, maar verder wilde gaan met 3D voor Rapunzel, omdat het veel moeite had gekost de "looks" goed te krijgen. Wel een begrijpelijke keuze, maar desondanks toch jammer.

Inderdaad jammer... Enchanted zal trouwens maar gedeeltelijk een tekenfilm zijn en deels live action.

About de Kikkerprinses, ik hoop enkel maar dat er nog steeds een publiek is. Want volgens mij ligt het probleem niet bij Disney, maar bij de massa die tussen al dat computergeweld vol (al dan niet geslaagde) humor de klassieke handgetekende films links laat liggen, onterecht. 'Brother Bear' was dan wel misschien geen 'Bambi', maar wel een zeer deftige traditionele 'classic' die alles in huis had om in dat rijtje thuis te horen. Is de huidige generatie deze films ontrgroeid? Best mogelijk. En de nieuwe generatie weet amper wat 'classics' zijn. Blame CGI!

Het is diezelfde CGi die er inderdaad ook voor heeft gezorgd dat als er niet genoeg grappen en verwijzingen voor ouderen in een tekenfilm zitten, hij prompt door de pers wordt weggeschoven zoals Curious George/nieuwsgierig aapje.

Maar ik ben blij dat ze het toch nog eens willen proberen, en dan nog wel "back to roots" met een sprookje. Hopelijk verschijnen er snel een paar schetsen van de personages.

Ik zie zojuist op UltimateDisney.com dat Disney een officiele press-release heeft gemaakt voor deze nieuwe traditionele 2D musical. Ik kijk er al naar uit! Zou dit het begin zijn van een nieuwe 'gouden tijdperk' voor Disney? Ik hoop van wel.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – (March 8, 2007) -- The Walt Disney Studios will continue its fairy tale legacy in animation by taking moviegoers on an all-new "once upon a time" musical adventure with its 2009 release of "The Frog Princess," it was announced today by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, and John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. A musical set in the legendary birthplace of jazz – New Orleans -- "The Frog Princess" will introduce the newest Disney princess, Maddy, a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana's mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.

"The Frog Princess" is based on an original story written by Disney's acclaimed filmmaking duo John Musker & Ron Clements ("The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Hercules"), who will also direct. Oscar®-winning songwriter/composer and New Orleans native Randy Newman ("Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Cars") will write songs and the score for this project. Peter Del Vecho, a 12-year Disney animation veteran, will produce.

Commenting on the announcement from The Walt Disney Company's 2007 Annual Meeting of shareholders, Cook said, "We're pleased to be here in the heart of New Orleans to announce 'The Frog Princess,' a great story with all the ingredients that go into making an extraordinary motion picture experience. Like many of Disney's most popular fairy tales, it has elements of magic, fantasy, adventure, heart, humor, and music. The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess character give the film lots of excitement and texture. We're also thrilled to have John Musker, Ron Clements and Randy Newman lending their talents and creative energies to this project. John and Ron helped to usher in Disney's second golden age of animation nearly two decades ago with 'The Little Mermaid,' and are on track to create the Studio's next great fairy tale adventure."

John Lasseter added, "Aside from being longtime friends and colleagues, John and Ron are two of the most influential and imaginative filmmakers in the animation medium, and I am so excited to be working with them in bringing their creative vision

for 'The Frog Princess' to the big screen. They've come up with an original story that is deeply rooted in the fairy tale tradition, and it's filled with great humor, emotion, and musical moments. John Musker & Ron Clements have directed and produced five feature films for Disney including "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin." Additionally they received story and/or screenplay credits as well. Musker began his career at Disney in 1977, after studying character animation at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). He started as an assistant animator and went on to animate on "The Fox and the Hound." Clements started at Disney in the Talent Development Program, and went on to serve a two-year apprenticeship under Disney animation legend, Frank Thomas. He moved from in-betweener to assistant to animator/storyman with credits on such films as "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too," "The Rescuers," "Pete's Dragon," "The Fox and the Hound," and "The Black Cauldron."

Randy Newman is a 17-time Oscar® nominee and winner (in 2002) for his song, "If I Didn't Have You," from the Disney/Pixar film, "Monsters, Inc." Among his many achievements, he has contributed songs and musical scores for such other Pixar animated features as "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Cars." Newman's impressive list of film credits also includes scores for "Ragtime," "The Natural," "Parenthood," "Awakenings," and "Pleasantville." He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002, and his other career milestones include three Grammy Awards, an Emmy, the first Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement, and an Annie Award.

Peter Del Vecho began his association with Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1995, following a 15-year stint working as a stage manager, production manager and associate producer in the world of live theater. From 1986-95, he worked for the renowned Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, leaving there as associate producer. At Disney, Del Vecho was the production manager on "Hercules" and associate producer on "Chicken Little," among other projects. A native of Boston, he received a degree in Theatre Arts from Boston University.

Maddy, the animated heroine in "The Frog Princess," will also join The Walt Disney Company's venerable court of beloved Disney princesses as they continue to enjoy the royal treatment at Disney's theme parks, consumer products, publishing, Internet and other businesses worldwide.

Dat kan alleen maar een mooi pareltje gaan worden. Het doet een beetje pijn om Alan Menken te zien gaan maar gezien het New Orleans thema is het wellicht inderdaad meer geschikt voor iemand als Randy Newman die hier zijn non Pixar stijl flink op los kan maken. Aan de andere kant hoorde ik bij het lezen van de synopsis toch eerder Woody Allen voor me. Al met al een heerlijk tradiotionele Disney setting.

Had precies hetzelfde. Alan Menken is toch dé Disney composer voor de traditionele musicals, maar inderdaad, de setting is New Orleans en dat is dus een jazzy sound die in feite perfect past bij Newman. Niet zo verwonderlijk dus achteraf gezien. Ach ja, Alan doet Enchanted al voor Disney (2d/life-action combi) dus daar kan hij zijn typische Disney stijl weer eens lekker laten klinken.

Jeps, sta al te popelen. Dit weekend weer eens een aantal Menken soundtracks beluisterd. Blijft geweldig. Belle, Aladdin, Hercules, Notre Dame. Perfectie.

YES! 2D! Die 3d'ige animatie films van disney zijn echt niks! Dit kunnen ze goed, gewoon mooie 2D films! Daarmee kunnen ze mee komen met de japanse tekenfilms!

Almost two years before its hoped-for release of its first hand-drawn animated film produced under the supervision of Pixar's John Lasseter, Disney has already drawn fire for alleged racial and ethnic insensitivities that were detected in its original announcement of the film, according to Disney watcher Jim Hill. Since the original title, The Frog Princess, might be regarded as a slur on the French, the title has been changed to The Princess and the Frog. The main character, named Maddy -- who was to become Disney's first black princess -- has had her name changed to Tiana, since Maddy reportedly sounded too much like Mammy. She will no longer be seen as a chambermaid working for a rich, white spoiled Southern débutante. In a statement, Disney, which said that it ordinarily does not comment on its animated films in the early stages of production, observed: "The story takes place in the charming elegance and grandeur of New Orleans' fabled French Quarter during the Jazz Age. ... Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney's rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity."

Jammer dat Disney zo overal rekening mee moet houden om gezeik van allerhande bevolkingsgroepen te voorkomen. Assepoester mag binnenkort zeker ook niet meer? Ten slotte zijn blanke slavinnen ook uit den boze.

Ik kan niet wachten tot hier weer een lekkere hoop controverse over komt, net als bij Song of the South
Sinds Kanye West z'n kleine Freudiaanse verspreking () live op antenne is het probleem rond de spanningen tussen african americans en zogezegde "autochtonen" (hoopje immigranten zijn het in principe allemaal) daar in de US of A weer pijnlijk actueel.

Nu Pixar onderdeel is van Disney doet Disney de 2D animatie, en Pixar de 3D animatie. De 3D films waar Disney mee bezig was (Rapunzel en BOLT) worden nu waarschijnlijk door Pixar uitgebracht. Overigens kijk ik erg uit naar Rapunzel, die ondanks dat hij 3D wordt, toch meer een terugkeer wordt naar de traditionele sprookjes waar Disney bekend om is, dan The Princess And The Frog (zou de topictitel daarin veranderd kunnen worden?). Onder andere door de liedjes die door Alan Menken geschreven gaan worden.
