2 methods depending on the version your set is pre-loaded. beats me why there's 2 diff methods.... maybe trying to discourage us from hacking?
1)
- Go to preference page in the Setup menu.
- Press 138931 on the keypad of the Remote Control.
- Options will be available to be selected.
- Done !
2)
- Open tray.
- Press 99990 on the remote control.
- Done !

Worked perfectly for Philips DVP3040/37 serial number K1Axxxxxxxx, from zone 1, allowing me to play any zone (tested) :
1. turn unit on
2. open the loading tray
3. press "setup" button on the remote
4. navigate to preferences using right arrow key (three clicks)
5. Enter "138931" on the remote
6. The current region is displayed (mine was "1")
7. Use the up arrow on the remote to change the region to "0"
8. Press the "setup" button on the remote
9. Press "OK" on the remote

The aformentioned solution thru the 'Preferences' menu no longer worked: this menu no longer exists. The interface is new with tabs down the left side and 3D-buttons.
The 99990 hack, fortunately, did work.
